DSO: Firstly, we are so in love with the new SS21 collection – it feels so fresh and effortless. Could you tell us a little bit about your design process and how you first approach a new collection?
AQ: Usually the starting point is with sourcing the fabric for the season. The fabric really tells you what the potential silhouettes look like and what kind of shapes and styles it will lend itself to. It’s very hard to work the other way around and have very fixed ideas about the design if the fabric that is available won’t behave the way you want it to or is incapable of creating the drape or shape your design needs.
DSO: The colour palette used in this new collection is so beautiful – particularly the Wabasi dress! Are there any places, designers or artists that you draw inspiration from?
AQ: Usually when I travel - the first thing I look up is the museums. Wasabi and some of the punchier colors from the collection reminded me of my trip to Giverny to Monet’s house outside of Paris. I went there during the summer, so the garden was in its full bloom. It gives inspiration about color palette and what colors work well together in harmony or contrast.
DSO: How would you describe your personal style and how is this reflected in your designs?
AQ: I like things to be effortless and easy. When designing - it’s quite intentional on my part to create garments that can be put together in a multitude of ways - to create your own capsule that you keep wearing over and over.
DSO: What are your top 3 styling tips?
AQ: 1. Consider the whole look - your bag, shoes, jewellery, even your hairstyle - these elements all add to the look. 2. Invest in learning to take up a hem or a good tailor. Items like pant length should be customised to your height. These will be your forever pants that you can keep coming back to over and over mixing and matching with your tops. 3. Invest in a go-to comfortable blazer. If you ever feel too casual and you need to dress up a look - you can always toss this blazer over the top.
DSO: If you could choose one hero piece from the Mode Edit, which would it be and how would you wear it?
AQ: The Gianna blazer in the linen stripe . I’ve been after a oversized neutral colored blazer. This is the sort of neutral colored blazer you throw over the top of your jeans, bike shorts, black tailored pants and it will work.
