1 November, 2022 New to Mode | Introducing Solaqua

Introducing Solaqua - timeless resort-wear pieces that are designed to transcend seasons. We caught up with the founder, Jessica Cognetta to learn more about the brand's background and ethos.

DSO: ‘SOLAQUA’ is the Latin translation of ‘sun and sea’. How do these two elements shape your ready-to-wear and lifestyle collections?

The sun and the sea have always been at the core of who we are.  Frequent travels to Italy to visit family in the summer have us forever inspired by European beach culture, where for locals heading to the beach is an all-day affair. From sun-soaked mornings on lounge chairs to their favourite spot for lunch and back again, afternoon swims followed by sunset aperitivos, always wearing the same effortless attire.. I wanted to create a brand that reflected this relaxed way of life. When we first launched SOLAQUA in 2019 we began selling luxurious handmade beach textiles that could be easily carried from the beach to the bar. We spend a great deal of time ensuring every detail that goes into our product development is considered and this same approach occurs when we are creating our resort wear pieces to ensure functionality, style and comfort are at the forefront of everything we do.

DSO: Timelessness is an important aspect of your designs. What does a timeless wardrobe look like to you?

When we think timelessness, we think of pieces that are trans-seasonal and transcend current trends. We deliver relaxed tailoring and minimal collections which complement the elements of
past seasons and lead-in to the designs ahead. This conscious approach ensures collections don’t become obsolete, and our customers can continue to curate their essential capsule summer wardrobes over time, sustainably

DSO: SOLAQUA’S collections are crafted with sustainability at front of mine – what are some key sustainability initiatives or practices you’re currently working on?

We carefully consider both the social as well as environmental impacts our brand has on the planet. Our towelling textiles are hand loomed and support a community of artisians in Turkey. Quality in
materials and authenticity workmanship ensure our pieces last a lifetime. We also work very closely with our RTW manufacturers, locally and off-shore, who share our code of conduct and hold
internationally recognised certifications such as OKEO-TEX Certification, BCI Cotton Certification & GOTS Certification. We are also in the process of becoming members of 1% for the Planet – a
global initiative that raises funds for diverse environmental organisations.

DSO: Where do you imagine the SOLAQUA muse wears her resort-ready pieces – is there a specific location you have in mind when you’re conjuring a collection, or is it more a state-of-mind?

The essence of SOLAQUA is very much a state of mind. Whether you are travelling along the Italian coast line or going from the beach to your favourite local wine bar at sundown, the SOLAQUA muse wears her resort wear pieces effortlessly & confidentially.
